Punjabi poems

Kali Raat Di Siyahi Ute,
Chand Di Gawahi Ute,
Sach De Kore kagaz ute,
Ik Akkhar Main Ban Jawa,
Tu Bhule Ta Teri Marzi,
Main Bhula te Me Mar Jawa

Sadi Raatan Di Neend Keeti Haram Ohne,
Sada Sacha Pyar Keeta Badnaam Ohne,
Asi Ohde Naal Waffa keeti Luk ke Zamane Tun,
par Sade Naal Bewafai Keeti Sare-aam Ohne.

Mithi Udeek te, Udeek Nalo Yaar Mitha,
Nitha Yarr Te, Yarr Nalo Ishq Mitha,
Mitha Ishq Te, Ishq Nalo Mithi sadi Yaari,
Is To Mitha Kuj Nahi Labna, Lab Le Tu Duniya Sari....

Love shayri

Mahek unki aaj bhi meri sason me hai,
har ek adaa unki meri in aankhon me hai.
woh bhale mita de dil se mera wajud,
Magar unki jagah aaj bhi meri in yaadon me hai.

Google exec confirms phone in the labs

So it seems that the oft-rumored handset from Google has taken that final leap into the "confirmed" column, though it may not be quite the be-all, end-all device we were expecting. Isabel Aguilera, Google's chief executive in Spain and Portugal, has admitted that the searchmeisters have some mobile goodness in the works but appeared to play down the project, noting that the phone is just one of 18 R&D initiatives the company currently has underway. Furthermore, she mentioned that Google's mobile skunkworks were designed to make their way into developing countries, suggesting that this may not be the Samsung sourced, iPhone-killing monster we'd been getting an earful about as of late. But hey, if Apple intends to turn the iPhone into a multi-device franchise, Google's entitled to do the same, is it not?

The chief of a main directorate of Google Spain confirms that the company is working in the development of a movable telephone

Isabel Aguilera, Chief of a main directorate of Google in Spain and Portugal, have confirmed to Noticias.com that the company is working, “among others”, in the development of a movable telephone. “A part of the time of our engineers we have dedicated it to the investigation of a movable telephone to accede to information”, has made specific Eyrie to this vestibule.

The speculations on the possible entrance of Google in the area of the design and the sale of movable telephones arose after the company recently published a use announcement in which it looked for engineers and analysts specialized in the sector of the telecommunications. In that same reclamation, Google specified that it is in phase of experimentation with diverse systems of wireless communications.

In a day on the integration of Internet in the strategy of business, organized by the Association for the Progress of the Direction of the Mediterranean Zone, Isabel Aguilera has explained to Noticias.com that although 70% of the time of the engineers are dedicated “to develop our nucleus of business, that is to say, the search and the publicity”, and a 20% to develop “products that they have enough that to see with this nucleus”, is certain that a 10% of that time are centered in the product development “that at some time could have to do with our business”.

Within this last scope, Eyrie has indicated that “it has been investigated” on a movable telephone through as can “be acceded to the information”, in addition to in “the way to less extend the society of the information in the developed economies”. In this sense, the Chief of a main directorate of Google in Spain and Portugal have aimed that although “can have products that can seem strange, all comprise of our process of innovation”.

At the moment, the motor search account with 36 products and “other 18 that are in laboratory” and, therefore, in phase of experimentation, between which would be the mentioned movable telephone.

GooglePhone said closer to reality

Engadget had a little post yesterday that had Google confirming the development of a mobile phone.

The European executive who confirmed the phone apparently downplayed it as one of many research projects the Big G has in its labs. Indeed, it isn’t clear whether Google (GOOG) would seek to partner with an existing handset maker - Engadget earlier had speculated about a Google/Samsung phone venture- or if it would build a phone itself, a la Apple (AAPL).
So far, Google has had some good success getting mobile versions of it search and mapping software onto cell phones, so why get into the crazy handset business? Like Apple, Google has a tricky relationship with the cellphone operators that distribute and control the wireless experience (in the U.S. at least.) Google has been one of the most vocal proponents of so-called Net Neutrality, which would prevent phone operators such as AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ), which own the nation’s largest wireless operations, from giving certain kinds of network traffic priority on their broadband networks.

Google, the Browser speculates, would also advocate a kind of wireless Net Neutrality, which would allow any device - including a GooglePhone - to attach to any wireless network, without the carriers’ explicit blessings.
But why a phone? As most readers of the Browser know, the wireless phone is THE computing device for the rest of the world. Consumers who will never own or even use a desktop computer will carry around a fairly powerful computing device on their hips. Google needs to be in the mobile space. And by creating its own device, or closely working with a device maker, Google can create a completely Google-ized customer experience, without interference from the mobile operators. Still, at least in the U.S., Google would have to work with a mobile operator (as Apple did, with AT&T’s Cingular) in order to get the phone to work on a mobile network.

T-Mobile Nokia 5300 MyFaves has Flash Lite screensavers

Yesterday I checked again the Nokia 5300 XpressMusic from T-Mobile and discover that it has 3 Flash Lite 2.0 screensavers, here are the pictures. I saw the planets flying around screensaver in other Nokia phones at 3GSM.

Nokia 6151

Nokia 6151

The Nokia 6151 is a 3G phone that looks very similar to the Nokia 6233. It's a classic straight design with a functional keypad and 5-way navigation key.

The Nokia 6151 is an attractive 3G camera phone which comes in a black coloured casing with subtle chrome edging which surrounds the phones screen & keypad. The phone has a large keypad which is user friendly & a clear screen which provides a 262k colour display with a screen resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. The handset is a classic design & measures 108 x 47 x 19 mm with a total weigh of 98 grams. The Nokia 6151 is a pleasure to use & a joy to look at. The Nokia 6131 & Nokia 6136 are mobile phones with flip open mechanism but they both have a similar elegant design concept as the Nokia 6151. The 6151 comes with 30 Mbytes of built in memory & with an expansion slot which can expand the phones memory to up to 2 Gbytes. The user can use the MicroSD™ memory cards to expand the memory & the cards can be swapped without the user having to turn off the phone.

Despite being a 3G phone, the 6151 has a rather lacklustre specification. Although the phone has a video camera, it's rear mounted, making video calling impossible - a major design faux pas for a 3G phone. The camera itself is really nothing special, at just 1.3 megapixels, no flash, and dodgy quality. The 6151 does have a good MP3 player and FM radio, but with no memory card included in the sales package, you'll have to fork out some more money if you want enough memory to store more than a few songs.

The Nokia 6151 comes with the latest messaging services which include text messaging (SMS), multimedia messaging (MMS), instant messaging & audio messaging. The instant messaging service allows the user to have an online conversation with other contacts whom are online at the same time as the user. The user can send a message to any compatible instant message contact in an instant. The Nokia Xpress audio messaging allows the user to send & receive messaging using audio input which is a fast an effective way to express the users feelings in audio. The user can send & receive MMS messages on their phone & enjoy sending & receiving messages which contain pictures, video, sound & text. The MMS message can be sent to any MMS compatible mobile phone user.

Features of the Nokia 6151 include:
• 3G

Flowers from Samsung

Samsung announced their full Le Fleur series, which represents a stylish trio of elegant mobiles targeted specifically at women. The three handsets are the new Samsung E570 and Samsung E420, as well as the Samsung E500 which is already officially released. The Le Fleur series is a continuation of the Samsung concept that a woman should have an expressive, feminine mobile to suit her style. This concept was born back in the day with the first feminine mobile Samsung A400, and later on revived with Samsung E530, Samsung E410, Samsung T500 among others.

The Samsung E570 is a fashionable handset following the design of Samsung E530. It has tri-band GSM/GPRS support, a 1.3 megapixel camera and a 1.8" 262K colors TFT display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. Further on, the Samsung E570 features Bluetooth, USB support, and a microSD memory card slot, along with some sports applications such as a calories calculator and pedometer.

The Samsung E420 is a budget model aimed at the young audience which nevertheless finds style more than important. The top panel is styled with colorful ornaments which have an attractive backlighting during calls or when the phone is ringing. The Samsung E420 has a VGA camera, a large main 2" 65K colors OLED display with a resolution of 128x160 pixels and a smaller secondary 1" 65K colors OLED display with a resolution of 96 x 96 pixels.

The new Le Fleur series mobiles are expected to be commercially available in November with an recommended price for Samsung E420 around 210-230USD and for Samsung E570 around 450 USD.

As already mentioned, the Samsung E500 is already known to the female audience since it's been on the market for some time now. It features tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support, a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, USB, 80MB of internal memory and a weight of only 85 g.

The main display is a 1.7" 262L colors TFT one with a resolution of 176x220 pixels, while the external one is OLED capable of displaying 65K colors with a resolution of 80 x 64 pixels. The body of Samsung E500 is fashionably styled with genuine leather and metallic elements.

Sony Ericsson K800 review: Digicam in disguise

Sony Ericsson K800 is one of the handsets we were so anxious to test that we could hardly wait for the phone to be brought in the office. Its highly advertised Cyber-shot camera made us as restless as kids on Christmas morning. Once we got it and before we started working on this review we spent a good deal of time experimenting with the exciting 3.2 megapixel camera. Not that we haven't seen a better camera, no! The thing is that this good camera just happens to be a good mobile phone, too.

Sony Ericsson K800 Sony Ericsson K800 Sony Ericsson K800
Sony Ericsson K800 official photos
Key features:

* A 3.2 megapixel Cyber-shot™ camera with autofocus
* Xenon flash
* Integrated image blogging support
* Memory card slot with hot swap functionality
* 3G support with video calls
* Great MP3 player
* FM radio with RDS
* Infrared port
* Bluetooth stereo support (A2DP)
* Multi-tasking support

Main disadvantages:

* A bit oversized
* Somewhat uncomfortable keypad design
* No EDGE or Wi-Fi support (K790 has EDGE, but no 3G)
* Records video in ancient QCIF (176 x 144 pixels) resolution only
* Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) card type is still very new and unpopular

Sony Ericsson falls in the market niche of highly functional devices for which size is not that important. It's a camera phone and the devices we like to call camera phones are phones that boast a digital camera that's on par with the low-end digital cameras on the market. Speaking of camera phones, nowadays we see an increase in the maximum image resolution. We see implementation of new features which not long ago belonged to the world of the digital cameras only - such as specific scene modes, xenon flash, auto focus. Recently announced Nokia multimedia phones would even have optical zoom. The camera functionalities of the mobile phones are becoming increasingly important since the battle for the ultimate multimedia device continues - a device that can take great pictures, capture hi-res video, one that plays high-quality music, one that you can browse photos or play games on, one that helps you organize your daily schedule and browse the Internet, and in the same time functions equally well as a regular phone. Right about now buying a new mobile phone is always a bit of a trade-off on some of those things. There is no perfect phone.

In today's review we are going to take a look at a handset that makes a big stride in the quest for the ideal mobile multimedia device - a camera phone that still has its flaws, of course, but that shows us clearly the direction in which the industry is going to and thus turns into a symbolic device for us. Yes, we are talking about the Sony Ericson K800 Cyber-shot mobile phone. It has GPRS and UMTS support, memory card slot, great camera, a great MP3 player, stereo Bluetooth support, FM radio, integrated image blogging service and Google search and last but not least - a great 3.2 megapixel camera with an integrated real xenon flash.

The phone will be manufactured in two versions - one will be designated K800 and the other one - K790. The difference between the two is that the first one is produced with 3G UMTS support and a second VGA camera for video calls but no EDGE support, while K790 will have only EDGE support. The availability of the two models would be market-dependent, of course.

Before we start, though, I should warn you that the phone we tested was a beta version so there are some bugs we found and we are more than sure that they would be fixed in the final version. We won't mention those as we go along the review though, because the bugs are a pretty common thing in a pre-release version. As regards the retail package, the box should include a stereo headset, a USB cable and a 64MB Memory Stick Micro (M2) card along with a Memory Stick Duo Pro adapter but as we have always said - the contents of the retail package are market and country dependant.
All those numbers

The phone design follows the trend of all K-series phones of SE. It's really nice and it's only half a centimeter longer than the well-known K750, although at first sight it seems a lot bigger than K750. Otherwise the measures of both phones are pretty close to one another. K800 has dimensions of 105 x 47 x 22 mm and weighs 115 g. Just for comparison, the dimensions of K750 are 100 x 46 x 20.5 mm, while its weight is 99 g.

Sony Ericsson K800 Sony Ericsson K800 Sony Ericsson K800
K800 compared to K750

We got to admit that the phone's construction is pretty solid and the construction quality deserves a compliment. The weight on the other hand is perfectly balanced and doesn't feel much at all.

Here's a trick to play Tetris, also known as Klotz on a Siemens S1.
Turn the phone on. Enter PIN. Before the telephone has logged in to the your GSM net do the following steps.
1: Choose F 9 (function settings)
2: Choose send own number and push the right button for choose.
3: Push 9
USE 2 as <> , rotate the klotz with 5 and drop with 4.
[I have just heard from one of the programmers of the phone that Tetris was in the phone during development, but it was removed before it was produced. Apparently someone has the patent on games in mobile phones and Siemens didn't want to pay the licensing fees. It was either in Menu F-9-9 or it's not there at all.]

These codes will work on most Nokia Mobile Phones to activate/deactivate advanced hidden functions that you can’t change through the phone menu

One useful function that all Nokia’s I’ve owned have is “Cell Info Display” which can usually be found in the phones “Display settings” (eg: in a Nokia 1600) or “Phone Settings” (eg: in a Nokia 3315)

If your network supports it, when “Cell Info Display” is enabled, it will display the name of the base station your mobile is currently connected to on the screen eg: when i’m walking around the city it says “Sydney CBD” and when i’m at home it displays the name of my suburb.

Note:
To display “p” press “*” three times within one second, To display “w” press “*” four times within one second, To display “+” press twice “*” within less than a second

Nokia Error Messages

Code error – appears if the unlock password entered is incorrect. You need to go through the whole process again, ensuring you enter the correct 10-digit code.

SIM was not restricted – appears if the handset has not been locked to a network. You should be able to use any SIM card in this handset.

Not allowed - If the syntax while entering the unlock password is incorrect, nothing happens. If you have tried to unlock the phone 5 times with an incorrect password any further attempts to unlock the phone will generate this message. The phone will need to be electronically unlocked at a Nokia service centre.

LG KE850 Prada goes official

Today LG officially confirmed their upcoming LG Prada phone. Featuring a full touch-control design, the new handset is the result from the collaboration between the Korean manufacturer and the Prada design team.

Yesterday at the IF product design awards the LG Prada mobile was first seen designated as the LG KE850. The unique thing about it is the large touchcreen menu interface which eliminates the need for a conventional keypad whatsoever. We cannot help but think about the newly announced iPhone by Apple which though would much larger and would run under the OS X. The LG KE850 Prada phone on the other hand would be only 12 mm run with a Macromedia Flash user interface.

LG Prada KE850 LG Prada KE850 LG Prada KE850
LG Prada phone

The Prada phone by LG (KE850) would feature a large 3" LCD touchscreen display with yet unknown resolution and would also have a 2 megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach optics and a microSD memory card slot. The most interesting thing about the display itself is that it's made using the capacitive touchscreen technology. What that means is that the screen uses electroconductivity to sense your touch - much like the touchpad on the popular LG Chocolate. This technology is made to be used with fingers only, so the use of a stylus is out of the question whatsoever.

The PRADA Phone by LG will be available with prices starting from 600 EUR in the UK, France, Germany and Italy as of late February, 2007, followed by countries in Asia such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore from late March, 2007. The Korean version of the phone is scheduled to launch in the second quarter of 2007.

Samsung X830 review: The small big player

The controversial Samsung X830 won’t leave you indifferent. It is a MP3 player with 1 GB of built-in memory on one hand, and a mobile phone, supporting Bluetooth and EDGE on the other hand. The unusual design also draws the attention – it will amuse some, while it will definitely inspire others.

Key features

  • 1 GB internal memory
  • Small size
  • Quality music reproduction
  • Keypad lightning
  • EDGE support
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack

Main disadvantages

  • Unusual keypad layout, keys located in two columns
  • Bad location of the built-in camera lens
  • Unstable construction of the swivel hinge mechanism
  • No memory card slot
  • No email client
  • Low quality of retail package headphones
  • Software issues

The topic of the this year’s Christmas time when it comes to mobile communications was clearly the music player capabilities of mobile phones. After the music-oriented models such as 5200 and 5300, the specially designed smart phones such as 3250 Xpress Music and 5500 Sport Music Edition of the Finnish brand Nokia and after the top Sony Ericsson W850i and W950i Walkmans, here comes the Korean Samsung. The untraditional X830 model again predisposes to thoughts, whether the music players’ integration into the world of mobile phones won’t take to an exactly opposite directi.

We have already met

The X830 concept comes from the SPH-S4300 model, being available from the first quarter of 2006 in Korea; we have already seen this model on the CeBIT Fair in Hanover. Physically, Samsung appears more like a music player than like a mobile. The multimedia functions in a phone are essential for a certain group of people. On principle, however, we expect that the phone functions won’t suffer from the multimedia ones. Unfortunately, the manufacturers often do this.

The overall phone design is contradictory in many ways. To some it may look stylish, to others – the new form may look rather controversial. True fact is that the dimensions of 84 x 30 x 19 mm are at least unusual and hardly remind of an ordinary phone. I thought that the Samsung weighs less at first sight. The weight of 72 g however was no such a big surprise, having in mind the phone size. Yet, from current models it compares only to Sony Ericsson J100 in terms of weight.

According to the available information Samsung X830 will be sold in six color variants: blue, green, orange, pink, white and black. I would unambiguously prefer the more conservative black variant. I didn’t like much the orange-silver cover of the sample model we had for testing.

Ah, those swivel hinges

There aren’t many models with rotating construction on the market. Unfortunately the Samsung X830 swivel mechanism is not very successful. The disadvantages aren’t visible at common manipulation, but the construction won’t stand at thorough testing. The deflections in closed, semi open and fully open positions may be felt clearly and you have to get used to them in the phone’s everyday use. Moreover, while in closed position the lock mechanism does its job satisfactory, but when opened, it fails to lock the upper part in an upright position. A little consolation is the fact, that rotating it about ten degrees activates the opening mechanism, which provides the movement to the upper position side. So, you don’t have to push it all the way up.

Opening the phone with one hand is easy due to its width of only 30 mm. It’s enough to turn the phone with display down and push with thumb to the right side board. It’s easy for right-handers; left-handed people have to make bigger effort. Right thumb manipulation is after all simpler than pushing with the other left hand fingers.

The outsides

The Samsung body is made of plastic covers, supplemented by metal buttons. One such button serves for locking the music player controls; the lower edge of the same side features the traditional eyelet for a neck strip. The opposite side incorporates two buttons, intended for volume control. The cover of the common connector for headphones, data cable and charger is situated above them.

To loosen the battery cover, use the buttons, located on the upper. They seem more as dummy buttons, because pressing them is practically impossible and removing the battery will cost you some more efforts and strain. The battery cover takes ? of the mobile’s back side; the built-in camera lens is located on the remaining area.

The provided battery is Li-Ion with capacity of 800 mAh and maximum indicated lifetime of 120 h in stand-by and 3 h of talk time. The real values move about two and a half days in stand-by mode. Using the music functions shortens the battery charging cycle, of course, but still it easily lasts one day without need to be charged.

Samsung Ultra Smart F700

RIM Blackberry 8100 Pearl

For years on end Research in Motion (Limited) Blackberry has been one of the leading companies as far as business-oriented mobile phones are concerned. They have led the way for a number of other allegedly leading companies and manufacturers of phones and software developers, such as Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and Microsoft, insofar as the enterprise development of mobile products is being viewed.

Oriented mostly towards today’s business users, RIM phones rely on high quality voice services and the usage of the device as a means of communication proper: a phone as well as a powerful e-mailing system supported by a keyboard for easier writing from the device itself.

Blackberry Pearl is the first product of this brand that not only ranges over business services, but entertainment ones as well: this is the first Blackberry featuring a built-in camera, the first with a memory card slot and also the first to have a multimedia player. In this way the company is trying to venture into the market group that has as yet remained out of their scope– people with more spare time who, though valuing the phone’s business functions, are not that dependent on them and at the same time will not deny themselves the entertainment options.

Apart from its new functionality, 8100 Pearl has a revolutionary design indeed! It has been abruptly cut in size in comparison with the previous models, retaining the Sure Type keyboard, characteristic of the ‘smaller’ models of the brand. Besides that, it adds a very up-to-date and fashionable appearance by means of the elegant black reflecting look of the surface, similar to that of the Motorola KRZRs, which are a hit among ‘designer’ phones at the moment, the way RAZR was at its time. The eye is caught by the innovative trackball – a small white (gleaming) sphere, after which the phone has been named ‘Pearl’.

RIM Blackberry 8100 Pearl has been conceived as a good-looking and quite small stylish business phone, emphasizing on e-mails and voice conversations, including, however, multimedia options such as a mega-pix camera and a music player. The set consists of:

  • Phone;
  • Charger;
  • Mini USB cable;
  • Software CD;
  • User Manual.

Lenovo shows Windows Mobile 6 offerings

Lenovo's been pushing phones in its native China for some time -- including some bearing Windows Mobile -- and the company is among Microsoft's launch partners for version six at 3GSM this week. Details are slim for both of these units, but we're guessing the Standard device on the right will be destined for Russia on account of its rather, um... Russia-ish keypad. The Professional handset on the left, though, we're going to call the "Peacemaker." We're not sure exactly how a Google logo found its way prominently onto the frontside of a Microsoft-powered handset, but hey, if all parties involved are cool with that, we're cool with that, too.

i-Mate goes deep with Ultimate line, five models promised

i-mate is taking a pretty interesting approach with its newest range of Windows Mobile devices -- the WM6-equipped "Ultimate" range -- by shoving a full five models out the door, all differing only in form factor. Clockwise from the upper left, we have all five in purely theoretical, rendered form: the 5150, 6150, 7150, 9150, and 8150. The strategy makes sense, really; everyone wants a solid spec sheet, but getting everyone to agree on a single shape is an exercise in futility. With 256MB of ROM, VGA displays across the board, tri-band 3G radios, Bluetooth 2.0, and FM radios, the Ultimates definitely hold their own in the spec department -- the only question, then, is whether they've nailed the industrial design. The first model being shown all public-like, the 5150 slider, is admittedly an acquired taste, but some of the others really caught our eyes (7150 and 9150, we're looking at you).

Mobiles linked to tumors

NicFleming

Friday, January 26, 2007

Long-term mobile-phone users are significantly more likely to develop a certain type of brain tumor on the side of the head where they hold their handsets, according to new research from Finland.

A large-scale study there found that those who had regularly used mobiles for longer than 10 years were almost 40 percent more likely to develop nervous system tumors called gliomas near to where they hold their phones.

Gliomas are tumors that develop in glial cells - tissue that provides energy, nutrients and other support for nerve cells in the brain.

The finding, to be published later this year in the International Journal of Cancer, is the second study to suggest increased risks of specific types of brain tumors in regions close to where mobile phone emissions enter the head.

But a number of other studies have found no increased health risks associated with mobile- phone use, and some industry figures have declared that no more research is needed.

Researchers from the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority in Finland compared the mobile phone use of 1,521 people with gliomas with that of 3,301 people without the cancers.

Before separating out long-term users or looking at the different risks of developing tumors on the side where users held the phone, the scientists found no link between mobile use and gliomas.

When they looked only at people who had used a mobile for 10 years or more, however, they found that they were 39 percent more likely than average to get a glioma on the side of their head where they held their handset.

Anssi Auvinen, an epidemiologist involved in the study, said: "It seems credible as it was after long-term exposure - which makes sense in terms of the length of time it takes for tumors to develop - and it is localized to the side of the head where the handset is held. We need more research on long-term use."

Louis Slesin, editor of Microwave News, a US newsletter on radiation and health that reported the new study, said: "We now have two tumor types found among people who use mobiles for more than 10 years, shown by two different research groups. That is compelling evidence."

But Anthony Swerdlow of the British-based Institute of Cancer Research, who was also involved in the study, said the results should be treated cautiously. "People who have had a cancer tend to look for reasons for their cancer," he noted.

"This might influence their report of the side of the head on which they used their phone."

Lawrie Challis, chairman of the British government-funded Mobile Telecommunications Health Research program, said most research had shown that mobiles were safe in the short term but there was a "hint of something" for longer-term users.

He is negotiating funding for a long-term international study into whether 200,000 volunteers face increased risks of any serious diseases including cancer as a result of using a mobile. The finding from Finland, he said, is "further reason why a long-term study is something that we need to do." THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

Peapod DAP can handle vicious babies, but Apple legal?

You'd think that Apple's, um, loving oversight of its trademarks and trademark applications would scare potential DAP manufacturers away from using any combination of the letters p, o, and d in their product name, so we assume that Calgary-based Peapod Toys hasn't been following the American legal scene all that closely. In any event, the small company has just announced its self-titled, baby-targeted MP3 player at the International Toy Fair, which allows the one-and-under crowd to rock out to up to two hours of their favorite Raffi tunes. But infants and electronics go together like elephants and antique shops, you say? Not to worry: the Peapod is wrapped in a soft rubber shell that promises to protect it from mushed carrots, multiple collisions with the wall, and even the occasional teething session. It also sports a built in speaker (babies + headphone wires = potential disaster), a claimed 40 hours of battery life from a single AA, and support for select educational content available on the Peapod website. No word so far on price or release, but we'll go out on a limb and assume that we're looking at "cheap" and "soon," respectively.

Rumored: HTC P6500 Sirius, HTC S420 Erato, HTC S730 Wings

The HTC lineup for 2007 will obviously continue to attract interest as new models continue to make waves throughout the PDA world. Rumors about their latest mobiles are now abundant and more info is available on the HTC Wings and the HTC Erato plus some info on the yet unknown HTC P6500 (HTC Sirius).

he real news is the info about the highly interesting HTC P6500 (HTC Sirius). The whopping 3.5" 65K TFT display may only make users feel sorry that it comes with a QVGA resolution only. Rest assured as the device is supposed to have quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus 3G and Wi-Fi and would be powered by a 400MHz Samsung processor. Running on the Windows Mobile 6 Professional OS, the HTC P6500 (HTC Sirius) would also be equipped with a 2 megapixel camera. The HTC P6500 (HTC Sirius) is expected in August 2007.

The other two devices are smartphones and many of you may already heard rumors about them. The HTC Erato is the more interesting one. Up until now even its code name has remained unknown. The device is to be released as HTC S420 and is supposed to be powered by a 400MHz Samsung processor and Windows Mobile 6 Standard. It should also come equipped with a 2.4" 65K colors TFT display with a QVGA resolution. The HTC S420 (HTC Erato) would have quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus 3G/HSDPA-enabled telephony. An FM radio, a microSD memory card slot, a 2 megapixel camera and the integrated Sirf Star III GPS receiver add nicely to the picture. The HTC S420 (HTC Erato) is expected in April 2007.

The HTC S730 (HTC Wings) would be the possible successor of the HTC S710 (HTC Vox). It would feature the same dual keypad design as the S710 but will be powered by the more powerful Samsung 400MHz processor and would again run on Windows Mobile 6 Standard. As far as connectivity is concerned it comes with quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus 3G and HSDPA and Wi-Fi. It would also boast a 2 megapixel camera and an integrated Sirf Star III GPS receiver. Basically the only thing that would separate it from being a fully-fledged PocketPC is the lack of toucscreen capability which is not a necessary bad thing since many users prefer to do without a stylus. The HTC S730 (HTC Wings) is expected in July 2007.

Amnesty International set for donations via mobiles

Amnesty International has announced that it is to launch a system whereby donations can be made via mobile phones.

Instead of using the premium rate text message system, the charity intends to introduce a digital wallet method known as LUUP.

This will allow more money to go to the human rights organisation instead of allowing network operators to take a cut for using premium rate messages.

Donors can also send up to £800 via their mobiles, instead of having to stick to the £4.50 limit imposed by text messaging.

'LUUP presents a mobile payments option that is not only easy-to-use and very secure, but also ensures the donation ends up with those who need it most,' commented Katie Hart, new business development manager of Amnesty International UK.

Earlier this year, the Acorns Children's Hospice used the LUUP system to receive donations for its Have A Heart campaign on Valentine's Day.

Sony Ericsson K550 review: A Cyber-shot on a budget

Sony Ericsson K550 review: A Cyber-shot on a budget

Already a magic word in the world of mobile phones, the Cyber-shot brand, has now received a new member. The Sony Ericsson K550 is a feature-rich cameraphone with an enjoyable 2 megapixel camera, nice imaging applications, FM radio and a memory card slot. And all that at a reasonable price that may attract your attention. Anyways, if we’ve managed to grab it, feel free to join us on a tour with the K800’s little brother.

Key features:

  • 2 megapixel camera with auto focus
  • Active lens cover
  • M2 memory card slot (comes with a 512MB card)
  • FM radio with RDS
  • Tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  • Bluetooth support
  • Multi-tasking
  • Small size

Main disadvantages:

  • Low resolution display
  • Camera not as good as the Cyber-shot brand suggests
  • Records video in ancient QCIF resolution only

The Cyber-shot revolution has done only good to the Sony Ericsson sales. It proved rather successful and that is the reason why the manufacturer naturally releases a more affordable cameraphone to the masses. Sony Ericsson continue their long line of bar phones which are either camera or music-oriented with the K550. The midrange K-series continuation comes again in a small shell with a tight fit waist. At only 14 mm thickness, it surely packs in some nice features. So let’s continue with our review, but bear in mind that in the case of Sony Ericsson the Cyber-shot logo does not necessarily mean great camera performance but enhanced imaging capabilities.

The Sony Ericsson K550 is going to be produced in two distinct versions. The first one is the K550i and the second one the K550im which is an i-mode version of the mobile and is the first i-mode phone by the manufacturer bearing that Cyber-shot logo. The test handset we received is in fact namely that i-mode version. It carries certain differences and as such those will be duly noted. Nevertheless, it gives us pretty much the full picture about the more widely-distributed would-be version – K550i.

An impressive start

Sony Ericsson K550 leaves nice impression at first sight. It measures 102 x 46 x 14 mm and weighs only 85 g. The handset design is styled with the new Sony Ericsson style – circular navigation keys and thin metallic alphanumeric keys. This is obviously the design that is going to reign in the Sony Ericsson camp this year as we see it on almost all their latest bar-shaped mobiles.

The E50 on the other hand is much called for to fit the budget and at the same time offer decent business convergence. Like mentioned in the Mobile Buying Guide that the E50 is an economic businessman s phone. When I said that I didn't mean the banya kind of business man, but was referring to a person with minimalist business use of a phone. To get a better idea of what I'm trying to convey, read on. Bundle

The Nokia E50 bundle is not the multimedia package, but it is more-or-less good enough for a businessman. But that doesn t rule out the fact that a businessman wouldn t want to have a stereo headset, which seems like the worst part of the bundle. Anyways here s the list. Latest mobile phones from Japan 2

This is the Mitsubishi D800iDS clamshell phone, which features a touchscreen instead of a keypad. You can use the touchscreen to dial numbers on a virtual keypad or write and draw on it using a stylus.

With the launch of the LG Prada phone and iPhone later this year in the UK, it looks like touchscreens are going to become more and more common in the UK's mobile phone landscape, so start getting used to them.

Latest mobile phones from Japan

If you think the mobile phones we have here in the UK are cutting edge, think again. Japan's mobile phones are so advanced that the entire country yawned sarcastically when the iPhone was announced.

From phones that can tell who their owner is using facial recognition, to phones that let you buy things over the counter by simply touching a sensor, the list of features available on Japanese phones is practically endless.

Check out some of this year's highlights -- including a phone you can dunk in the bath, a phone that can tell the mood of a text message and even one that uses Sony's Bravia TV technology.

First up is the Fujitsu F703i (pictured) that can impressively be submerged in 1m of water for 30 minutes. It also comes with a relax mode that makes the handset play sounds and glow with colours chosen by a colour-therapy expert. A perfect phone for anyone who likes to unwind in the bath.

Official: Japan + Mobiles = Love

A survey in Japan has confirmed what we all suspected – the mobile phone is rapidly eating into how most people use their free time, as well as destroying more traditional forms of communication.

The research, by Nepro IT [Japanese PDF link], shows that 29% of Japanese respondents use their phones for three or more hours every single day, with an unprecedented 13% of the total tapping away for at least five hours daily. A year previously, the same firm’s data showed a quarter of people topping three hours a day.

Additionally, almost three quarters of those surveyed say they send fewer written communications, such as letters or cards, and 11% claim to have reduced face-to-face communication with friends and family.

Most significantly, more than 80% of the 3,750 people in the study use functions beyond talking and texting – mostly downloading music and online shopping. As Nepro’s clients include the major wireless networks in Japan, it’s clear those companies can look forward to continuing healthy bottom lines.

Girls and mobiles

Girlsphone An interesting report on mobile phone manufacturers use of public relations photography and their relation to the success or otherwise of a particular model has just been published.

The researchers at tagmonkey.com have produced a report tracking 200 photographs used by manufacturers to promote their mobiles. The report asks: what is best for the success of a mobile -- photos with more girls and more phones, or photos of more phones with less girls or any combination of the two.Girlsphone2

The photographs were collected over a two year period and the analysis draws some conclusions as you can see from the chart to the right (click to enlarge).

3GSM: Lexar Offers 4GB miniSDHC/2GB microSD

Lexar is following SanDisk and Kingmax and launching its 4GB miniSDHC (High Capacity) and 2GB microSD memory cards for mobile devices at 3GSM. SanDisk and Transcend had announced 4GB miniSDHC cards around September/October last year.

Although not as cool as the 4GB microSD HC cards from SanDisk, 2GB microSD cards are good as they’ll work with current generation devices. The 4GB miniSDHC cards on the other hand are also going to need compatibility checks, with the new HC variants not being backward compatible with existing miniSD-only devices.

Look for Lexar's cards in the market after April.

Nokia E90 Pictures Leaked?

This is a mockup of the new Nokia E90 Communicator created by a Mobile Review forum member called deuxani.

The Nokia E90 is supposed to have quad-band GSM and HSDPA support, WiFi, a wide internal display of 800x352, a hefty QVGA external display, both of which support 16 million colors and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

The menu button on the external keypad indicated that the outer phone runs on Series 60, as opposed to Series 40 on the older Communicators.

Spice Edge S-1000

Smart looking finish
Large touch-screen
Hold key for key lock
USB Mass Storage and recharging
CPU power management
A2DP support in Bluetooth
Business card recognition works alright
NO EDGE!
No QWERTY keypad
A bit bulky
Camera quality is not good
Inset joystick can be confusing
Expensive

Spice Telecom recently launched around 15 new mobile phones in the city, ranging from ultra low end, black-and-white phones to high-end touch-screen smartphones. We'll be taking a look at some of the interesting phones they've launched, starting with the Spice Edge S-1000.

The Spice Edge S-1000 is the highest end, most expensive model that Spice Mobile has in its range. It is a touch screen smartphone running Windows Mobile 5.0. Ironically, the Spice Edge doesn't support EDGE network technology (Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution, 2.75G), the successor to GPRS (2.5G). It only does quad-band GSM and GPRS. We asked them why the Spice Edge doesn't support EDGE, and they said it's not about that specific technology, but rather it's meant to imply the 'cutting-edge' features of the phone. Almost all new phones launched recently at 3GSM support HSDPA (3.5G), while several phones in the local market are already UMTS/3G ready. After this you bring an EDGE-less phone to the market and call it 'cutting-edge'? I would shoot my marketing department if they even suggested such a branding campaign for a product like this!

Anyway, let's move on to the review.

Design
The phone does appear a bit bulky and heavy, but it won't stick out like a sore thumb in the hands of a businessman dressed in a suit, who would otherwise typically be carrying a BlackBerry. The phone is pretty smart looking, and though the shape won't win it any merit, the choice of using a brushed metal finish on the surface of the phone gives it that elevated status.

The phone has a large, 2.8-inch, 65k color QVGA display that's quite bright and doesn't go blank when you take it out in sunlight. The screen is touch sensitive and the phone also comes with a stylus placed on the rear. The screen was calibrated perfectly out of the box and it was effortlessly usable both with the stylus as well as the fingers.

Below the screen is a numeric keypad with a few oddities. First of all, some of the buttons are too small, making them difficult to click considering the size and weight of the phone. Then, the 5-way navigation joystick is set into the middle of the 2 and 5 keys, which is one thing that will take a lot of getting used to. Not to simply use the joystick, but to NOT use it when you're in the middle of writing a text message. The click of the joystick is also quite sensitive, so it's guaranteed that you WILL end up clicking the stick at least once during an SMS. The keypad has the normal set of keys and also a 'modus' key that lets you cycle through a list of 'favorite' applications. It's like a shortcut key, with an Alt-Tab like interface. The phone doesn't have a QWERTY keypad, so the only input methods available are touch-screen/stylus and T9 using the numeric keypad.

On the right side, you'll find an unusual 'Hold' key that looks the keypad, which is more common among portable media players and Walkmans. But it's an interesting idea because it is so much more effective than a combination to lock the keypad. Just a flick of the key and the keypad is locked. A lot easier than struggling with keys placed far away from each other to activate the lock.

On the rear of the phone, you can see the camera lens, an LED flash, a loudspeaker and a 'Powered by ASUS' logo next to it. The Spice Edge S-1000 is actually a re-branded Asus P525 smartphone. Nothing has been changed in the phone - when you start it up, you get the Asus logo splash screen and the interface also has Asus Today and other specific stuff.

Below the phone, you get a standard mini-USB slot and a standard 2.5mm stereo headphone/headset jack.

Nokia N93i

Better looking
A bit smaller and lighter
Great video quality
1GB miniSD bundled
Adobe Premiere Elements bundled
Too expensive to upgrade to
Technically unchanged
Multimedia/camera unchanged
Low battery life
When you think of the amount of money that was once being asked for the older Nokia N93, the ex-flagship N-series model from Nokia, you can’t help but writhe at its look. I mean, Rs. 38,000 for that big black piece of a brick? Come on.

The way it looked wasn’t the end. There were various problems with general ergonomics, side joystick and also some issues with the OS and the camera. Here today, we have the swanky new N93i, the latest, greatest and also the most expensive Nseries phone. Did Nokia consider the users' feedback in the N93i? Let’s find out.

Design
The first thing you can see is that the N93i is totally shiny and swanky, something the original N93 could never win with. The front of the phone is a complete mirror-finish surface, quite like the Sony Ericsson Z610i. However, it isn't 100% mirror-like, in that it still has a bit of warping, so if you look at yourself in it, your face will appear contorted. Below this display, hidden away, is another 65k color sub-display that almost looks like an OLED display found on some other clamshell phones.

The original N93 was huge and heavy. With the new N93i, Nokia has addressed these issues a bit. The result is a phone that's 5mm slimmer and also around 20gms lighter. But even after this trim, the N93i is still a bulky and heavy phone by conventional standards.

The display is one of the biggest improvements as well as the biggest problems in this phone. The new display is still QVGA and the same size, but it's been upgraded to show 16 million colors and believe me when I say that you need to see it to believe it. The display is glossy, but that's the problem right there. It's so reflective, you'll keep turning the phone from side to side to be able to see it. And in sunlight, well, forget it. You can't see anything. This is a huge problem if you're shooting in camcorder mode during the afternoon - like we did for the little short film we made - the display is useless !!!

The keypad is a big problem in the N93i. The older N93 had a very nice, large keypad with big buttons that were very, very easy to use, even for those with large fingers. To shave off a few mm, the N93i has a RAZR-style flat, metallic keypad that's simply uncomfortable. It's not difficult to find the keys, but the tactile feedback it gives is not enough for a phone of this size. The keypad also has visibility issues in sunlight - the letters are just not viewable.

The joypad on the side of the phone that's used in the N93 was very uncomfortable to use. Thankfully, that has been changed to a simple joystick, which is one of the best changes in the phone. This is very, very easy to use with one hand when in camcorder mode.

The phone still opens up in the same manner as the older one: normal clamshell manner, laptop-style and camcorder style for taking video.

The battery compartment on the rear was a pain to open and shut in the N93. This has been replaced with a more normal cover thats easier to deal with.

This is about all the important stuff that's changed in the design and construction of the N93i.

Samsung Announces a Card-size DMB Phone

We were pretty impressed by the way Samsung managed to squeeze in everything including a 2 megapixel camera and a QVGA screen into a thin, credit-card size phone, but with this new baby, things are getting a little freaky. The B6700 also includes an integrated DMB TV tuner!

Other features of the card size phone remain fairly the same as the P310. It includes the same 2 megapixel digital camera with an LED flash, a wide-aspect QVGA screen, an extra battery in the leather pouch, media player features and those irritating touch-sensitive soft keys. The pictures don't seem to show any antenna-like appendage, which is required for DMB TV in Korea, so I wonder how high up you've gotta strech the phone out to get a good signal.

Oh, the AnyCall B6700 is Korea-only, so...

Samsung Launches C300 Slider

After the excellent E250 all-in-one slider , Samsung is bringing cool to the under-5k mark with the new C300. The phone is just a little under 2cm thick, but otherwise fairly compact at under 10cm high and less than 5cm wide.

Modeled after the D500, the C300 is a very basic model, with the only frills being a 128x160, 65k color display and GPRS/MMS support. The phone has a basic WAP browser and Java MIDP support. There’s no support for MP3s or MP3 ringtones. The phone offers no connectivity options (no USB, no Bluetooth, no Infrared), so the only means of get anything into the phone is GPRS, but with 2MB of memory, there’s not much you can do anyway. The phone doesn’t have FM radio, which is rather unfortunate for a phone in this price range.

For around Rs. 3,800, the C300 offers a decent option for the 'style-over-substance' user, but the lack of FM will be the reason why people will opt for the X520 or the Motorola FLIP W220 over this one. If you're looking for a decent feature set, the Samsung E250 is still a much better option.

Koi Khusi Ab Toh Muqadar Karde.
Bahot Muskil Lagta Hai Usse Duur Rehna,
Judai Ke Safar Ko Kum Karde.
Jitna Duur Chale Gaye Woh Mujhse,
Use Utna Kareeb Karde.
Nahi Likha Agar Nasib Me Uska Naam,
To Khatam Kar Ye Zindagi aur Mujhe FANAA Karde.

Tere Dile mein meri saanson ko panah mil jaye
Tere Ishq mein meri Jaan Fanaa Ho jaye

Ankhen to pyar me dilki zuban hoti hai,
sachi chahat to sada bezuban hoti hai,
pyar mai dard bhi mile to kya gabrana,
suna hai dard se chahat aur jawan hoti hai….

Phool hun Gulaab ka
Chameli ka mat samjhna
Aashiq hun aapka
Apni Saheli ka mat samjhna

Dur Humse Jaa Paoge Kaise,
Humko Bhool Paoge Kaise.
Hum Who Khushbu Jo Saanson Mein Utar Jaye,
Khud Apni Saanxon Ko Rok Paoge Kaise..

Bekhudi Ki Zindagi Hum Jiya Nahi Karte,
Yun kisika ka Jaam Hum Piya Nahi Karte.
Unse Kehdo Mohabbat Ka Izhaar Aakar Khud Karein,
Yun Kisika Peecha Hum Nahin Karte

Rone De Tu Aaj Humko, Tu Aankhe Sujane De
Baho Mein Le Le Aur, Khud Ko Bheeg Jane De
Hai Jo Seene Mein Quaid Dariya, Wo Choot Jayega
Hai Itna Dard Ki, Tera Daaman Bheeg Jayega

Adhuri saans thi dhadkan adhoori thi adhooren hum
magar ab chaand poora hain falak pe aur ab pooren hain hum

Taqdeer mein likhi thein muhabbat ki talkhiyan
Yeh zahar shauk sai khabhi mei nay piya nahin

Pehlay pahal ka ishq abhi yaad hai Faraz
Dil khud yeh chahata tha keh ruswaiyan bhi hoon

Haath aye na duniya bhi aur ishq mein bhi nakaam rahey
Sooch kar shirminda hein kyon donoon mein nakaam rahey

dosron ko saya bakhsh k khud dhoop me jale

zia ki tammana thi par na mili
saba ki tammana thi par na mili
saari umar dhundtay hi rahay
wafa ki tammana thi par na mili

Teri bewafaiyon per, teri kuj adaiyon per
Khabhi sir jhuka ker roye, khabhi moon chupa kar roye

Bewafa hum hein tou jane wafa yunhi sahi
dhoond lena jo tumhay koi wafadar milay

Guzari is tarha umer-e-muhabbat hum nay dhookay mein

Tala hai hum nay aaj barey ahtamam sai

Tumharay bus mein agar ho tou bhool jao humein
Tumhein bhulaney mein shayed humein zamaney lagein

Mein tou is wastey chup hoon keh tamasha na bunay
Tou samajta hai mujay tuj sai gila kuch bhi nahin

Janaza rook key mera wo iss andaaz sai booley
Gali hum nay kahi thi tum tou duniya choor chaley

Barey hi naaz sai khola tha khat mehboob ka
Baray hi roub sai likha tha nahin aaon ga

Mera moon kafan sai khola, mere paas aa kar booley
Yeh naya libaas kaisa yeh kahan ke iraday hein
